THE SCIENCE OF EARTHQUAKE

 EARTHQUAKE

As we all know that seismic energy is stored ,released ,propagate ,struck and terminate but we do not know where and when these actions occur , causing Earthquake. The earth crust or lithosphere is broken into large irregular pieces called lithospheric plates. The junctions of these plates i.e. plate boundary ,are easy outlets to release the energy stored in rocks ,in the form of sudden transient motion of seismic waves which are generated either by rapturing of rocks or rock movement along already present fault.

Earthquake are also caused by volcanism , due to the movement of magma and related underground disturbances apart from sudden caldera collapse.
The place where earthquake originated due to rapture is called as Focus or hypocenter, the place above it on the ground is termed as epicenter  and place diagrammatically opposite to the epicenter on the other side of globe is termed as ante center.
Earthquake originating along the lithospheric plate boundary are termed as asinter - plate earthquake .And Earthquake originating in interior of lithospheric plates are termed as intra plate earthquake.
Some commonly used intensity scales are Modified Mercalli Intensity(MMI) and Medvedev Sponheurer Karnic (MSK).
Seismology involve the scientific study of all aspects of earthquake.

CLASSIFICATION OF EARTHQUAKE BASED ON FOCAL DEPTH-

SHALLOW FOCUS-

The earthquake which originate within top 70 Km of lithosphere and constitute almost 80 percent of earthquake.

MEDIUM FOCUS-

Earthquake that has origin between 70-300Km and account for 15 percent of all earthquakes.

DEEP FOCUS-

Earthquake that has origin between 300-700Km and accounting for approximately 5 percent of earthquake.
